It’s important to ensure that individuals with type 2 diabetes get on the right road from the start, as soon as they receive their diagnosis. At this point, the individual is faced with a range of challenges including, for example, initiating a new medication, managing lifestyle modifications, and being subject to an increased risk of psychological distress. Early and comprehensive management of T2D has been shown to improve self-care and reduce complications. Further to this, the point in time when an individual may require additional therapy can be another potential trigger for psychological distress.
Although this can be a challenging time, it is important for individuals with type 2 diabetes to have effective conversations with their physician. Previous studies have also shown that good patient-doctor communication can improve an individual’s satisfaction and adherence, improve quality of life, enhance self-care and may even promote better glycaemic control and outcomes.
